While care-giving is not picnic for the patient or the caregiver, it’s a much needed service as many worldwide are living longer. Also, dementia has added to the woes of the aging along with other diseases. Not to mention, younger people who are afflicted or bedridden for other reasons other than age, i.e. car accident, etc.

Having to care for my mother who has mild dementia wasn’t that bad until she had a mini stroke that affected her entire right side of her body. She had to have physical, occupational and speech therapy for an extended period of time. Bringing her home from the hospital after the stroke was very stressful because the stroke affected her memory and there were many days in the beginning that she did not recognize who I was and this made her very upset day and night. As time when on, she started to recognize me and desperately longed to go home, her safe haven. Mentally and physically, she was incapable of being home even with a caregiver. Only a daughter or family member would do what was necessary to get her back to some semblance of independence. Because of the stroke, she required assistance to walk initially. Because she was such a fighter, she was determined to walk or refused to believe that she couldn’t walk. Yes, she fell a few times, some due to her error and/or…
