The Longest Stroke-Dementia Road To Somewhere Journal
December 20, 2018 Tuesday — “The Light Within Her Soul!!!!!”
A new day, another day under our belt. This day was no different than the other days, but was somewhat tolerable. I tried to be as nice and as accommodating as I could nothing can replace her need to go home. She longed to go home like Dorothy of the Wizard of Oz. She is blindsided by her physical state of being and yet in denial of the stroke which I totally understand. It’s the dementia. She has never been away from home for four months so from this perspective, I totally understand. I have never been away from home that long myself and for a ninety two year old to feel this way, it’s totally acceptable no matter how erratic she was at times.
Tried to keep her calm because the speech therapist would be arriving any minute. My sister prayed on the phone with her and calmed her down a little. No sooner than the call was over, she started up again. Gave her a cookie and this calmed her down again. When it comes to good food and/or cookies, she is like a babe in your hands or putty where you can mold her anyway you like. Once she swallowed that last parcel of food, back to ranting she went. It’s amazing to watch this transformation, almost childlike.
