The Longest Stroke-Dementia Road To Somewhere Journal
January 25, 2019 “I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings, “She’s Home”!!”
This day was a very special day for many reasons. Mother and I departed for her home state. Got up early that morning ran to the gym for my workout and hurried back home for our early flight out. Of all days, Mother chose to sleep in. Any other day, she’d be up at the crack of dawn. Excitedly, rushed in woke her up and got her dress and gave her breakfast. Time moved so quickly, no time for therapy that day. Had to make sure all was packed and perfect for Mother’s departure. Took everything she needed from wheelchair, walker, medicine, heart monitor, you name it I took it. All this was needed to continue her complete recovery. Once all was intact, did a little work in my office upstairs where Mother wanted to join me. I thought, “great she gets to workout that right leg, up and down the stairs, fifteen flights up and down”. The rest is history, she did it.
I appeared more excited than Mother. After three months and a half with me and one month with my brother, perhaps it was a long time in coming and she had given up on the day or questioned if the day would ever come or if she really did have a home to go to. With dementia and a stroke, these questions are considered normal.
