The Longest Stroke-Dementia Road To Somewhere Journal
January 12, 2019 — Saturday “Mother Gets Me, I Get Her!”
This rainy day started like all others with my gym workout and returning home before Mother awoke. When I arrived home all was quiet and I immediately escaped to my office to work as I watched Mother sleep on the baby monitor. She slept the longest ever, probably due to the rain that can be very relaxing.
When she awoke, she awoke and I was all set to go with whatever she brought to the table that morning. As usual, she made her bed up and searched for her clothes to get dressed. Gave her a robe to put on and left the room, so that she would put it on solo. This was another way of making her totally independent and using that right hand more and more. It took a few more minutes but she got it done.
As she approached the counter for breakfast, I could tell she was in good spirit and so was I. She had a good nights rest and so did I. Normally, following breakfast, we’d have physical therapy but I switched things around a bit due house chores. This time physical therapy followed getting dressed and not breakfast. She seemed well adjusted to our daily routine and this switching around did not phase her. Dementia people like routine. It seem to keep them stable in a lot of ways.
Being that Mother will be returning home in a few weeks, my goal is to make therapy more intense for her speech, right leg, arm and hand.
