Being a supporter of natural hair, this article in the LA Times was a bit surprising but at the same time, not surprised. I have not had chemicals in my hair for over 30+ years due to the harsh chemical damages. I have lost so much hair over the years and had enough and learned how to take care of natural hair. While this was a daunting process, eventually I found products that were more suitable to my hair type. Most of the hair products on the market were not designed with black hair in mind.
Due to this profound reality is the reason Madame CJ Walker invented her own line of hair products and became a millionaire by way of it. You see. she created the line because of her hair issues and discovered all black women were faced with the same dilemma, hair been damaged by harsh chemicals.
As an actress who had braids and was sent out for an audition and was advised by my agent, the casting directors would not be pleased with my hair. So much about the talent being first. Discrimination was first here. If I don’t look like others or have straight hair then my talent was not enough. Sometimes, I’d just put on a wig to cover the braids.
